How Does BOTOX® Differ from Dysport® for Smoothing Out Wrinkles?

As you age, your body’s production of collagen and elastin slows, which can lead to signs of aging. Repeated facial expressions such as squinting and frowning also cause lines to develop, which quickly leads to more pronounced creases and wrinkles. Injectables such as BOTOX and Dysport are both treatments that smooth out wrinkles and can give you a younger appearance. However, there are differences in the debate over BOTOX vs. Dysport.

Dr. Christy Kirkendol Watson of Body Bar MD has offices in both Carmel and Terre Haute, IN. She offers both BOTOX and Dysport cosmetic treatments. During your consultation with Dr. Christy, she will evaluate your skin and listen to your goals to determine which one will best fit your particular needs.

All about BOTOX vs. Dysport

BOTOX is a wrinkle relaxer that helps decrease the appearance of creases in the skin by temporarily halting muscle contractions. Dysport also works in a similar fashion. Both solutions are formulated from Botulinum Type A, which works by blocking the muscle's nerve signals.

Dysport made its debut in Europe and was used in over 60 countries. In 2009, the wrinkle relaxer received FDA approval. It has been widely used to treat moderate to severe glabellar and forehead lines.

Although BOTOX and Dysport are remarkably similar and both rely on the same active ingredient, there are differences in concentration. BOTOX is less diluted than Dysport. Depending on the injection location, it sometimes takes more Dysport than BOTOX to gain the same results. However, the price of Dysport is usually less than BOTOX per unit, but if it takes more Dysport to gain the same results as BOTOX, then the price works out about the same.

The molecular and diffusion of Dysport causes it to spread quickly after injection and cover a larger area. In some situations, both BOTOX and Dysport are used in conjunction. It just depends on your particular needs and goals.

  • BOTOX is highly effective at treating a small area. It works well for lip lines and crow's feet. The high concentration moves slowly.

  • Dysport is often used in larger areas such as the forehead and to smooth out the 11 frown lines. It acts quickly and spreads rapidly.

During your initial consultation with Dr. Christy, she will discuss the benefits of BOTOX and Dysport. You might also want to consider combining a wrinkle relaxer with a dermal filler such as JUVÉDERM® or Restylane® to achieve even greater results.

After receiving cosmetic injections such as BOTOX or Dysport, you can return to your normal activities. However, you should avoid any strenuous activities for at least 24 hours. You should also sleep with your head propped up and avoid rubbing or touching your face for the first day following the treatment.

Following injections, you might suffer slight bruising, redness, or swelling for a few days. Within about a week, you will start to see visible results that will last for 3 – 4 months before you’ll need to undergo touch-up maintenance injections.
